How to Choose a Handwoven Rug for Your Space | VERDI

A handwoven rug is rarely just a rug. It anchors a room, sets its tone, and — when made by hand from natural fiber — brings a warmth and depth no machine can replicate. But choosing the right one is its own quiet craft. Here is how we guide clients through it at VERDI, where every rug is made to order in design, color, and scale.

1. Start with scale

Before color or fiber, think about size. A rug that is too small can leave a room feeling unmoored, while the right proportions pull the space together. As a general rule, allow the rug to sit beneath the front legs of your main furniture at minimum — and ideally beneath all of it. Because VERDI rugs are made to order, they can be woven to the exact dimensions of your space, rather than the other way around.

2. Choose your fiber

Fiber determines how a rug feels underfoot, how it wears, and how it catches the light. VERDI weaves with a range of natural materials, each with its own character:

  • Fique. Drawn from an Andean agave and harvested in Curití, Santander, it brings structure and an earthen, grounding texture.
  • Alpaca and baby alpaca. Soft and luminous, ideal where comfort and a refined hand are the priority.
  • Plantain fiber, yaré, and organic silk. Specialty fibers that add rare texture and depth to bespoke pieces.

Many VERDI rugs also interweave these fibers with copper, steel, or plated metal threads — the studio's signature contrast of the earthen and the luminous.

3. Let color follow light

Consider how light moves through your room across the day. Earthen, natural tones bring calm and warmth to bright spaces, while the glint of a metal thread can lift a darker or north-facing room. Because color is chosen per commission, a VERDI rug can be tuned precisely to the palette you already live with.

4. Consider the collection

Each VERDI rug collection speaks a slightly different language. Highland and Heritage explore the studio's foundational weaves; Macorina brings a sculptural, artful sensibility; Tatami, Sui, and Cuadros each offer their own rhythm and structure. Exploring the collections is often the clearest way to find the direction that suits your space.

5. Value the hand

Finally, remember what you are choosing. A VERDI rug is made entirely by hand by master weavers in our Bogotá atelier, from sustainably sourced fiber. It is woven not for a season but to last — and to be passed on. That is the essence of the studio's belief: that exceptional, sustainable craft is today's ultimate luxury.
