Material Integrity: Why Natural Fibers Matter

At VERDI, material selection is not just a design choice — it is the foundation of our identity. Natural fibers bring authenticity, performance, and cultural value to our textiles. They carry the characteristics of the landscapes and communities they come from, and they give each piece a sense of place that industrial materials cannot replicate.

Fique is one of our core fibers. It is produced and hand-dyed by an artisan community in Curití, Santander, where generations have cultivated and processed it with deep expertise. Fique is strong, matte, and highly structural — qualities that make it ideal for rugs, windowcoverings and wallcoverings. Its natural irregularities give our textiles their warm, organic character.

Our alpaca fibers — motón alpaca, baby alpaca, and bouclé alpaca — are responsibly sourced from Peru. Each type offers a different level of softness, warmth, and loft. All our Peruvian alpaca comes with international certifications that ensure ethical treatment, fair practices, and environmental responsibility. In weaving, alpaca adds depth and refined tactility, enhancing both comfort and performance.

Colombia’s own fibers also play a significant role in our material language.
We work with plantain fiber, cumare, yaré, and palma de seje — materials with distinct textures and deep roots in the territory. These fibers bring strength, identity, and cultural continuity to our pieces. They reflect local knowledge systems and highlight the diversity of Colombia’s ecosystems.

Together, these materials shape VERDI’s approach to textile design. Natural fibers provide durability, breathability, and long-term performance, but they also offer something less measurable: integrity. Each fiber holds a relationship to land, to community, and to tradition.

Working with them means honoring these connections — creating contemporary textiles that remain grounded in origin, authenticity, and craft.
