Colombian Luxury vs. International Luxury | VERDI

A reflection on international prestige, Colombian craft, and the value of looking closer.

Why does an object made thousands of miles away sometimes feel immediately luxurious, while one made close to home asks us to look twice?

The question has less to do with distance than with the stories we have learned to trust. A familiar name, a particular address, a silhouette recognised across continents: these details shape our expectations before we ever touch the object.

Much of the international luxury we know has mastered this language. Its appeal holds several things at once: the quality of the piece, the history of the house, and the pleasure of belonging to a world that others recognise. We encounter the object with part of its story already in mind.

Behind that recognition, there is also serious devotion to making. At Hermès, for example, artisans transmit their expertise through the house’s own school. The precision of a gesture becomes knowledge worth teaching, preserving, and carrying forward. ¹

Looking at luxury from Colombia invites us to consider how we recognise that same depth of knowledge here.

A contemporary Colombian studio may be relatively young, while the craft informing its work has a much longer history. The age of a brand tells us very little about the age of the knowledge within it. In Curití, Santander, fique weaving carries a history connected to coffee sacks, later extending into rugs, bags, and other objects through the skill and experimentation of local artisans. ²

That history deserves close attention. A fibre associated with everyday life can reveal extraordinary possibilities when someone understands how to work with it. Familiarity can make this expertise easy to overlook. We can know a material so well that we stop asking what it takes to transform it.

For us, this is one of the most interesting differences between established international luxury and Colombian luxury: the relationship between making value and making that value visible. A globally recognised house can draw on an existing vocabulary of prestige. A Colombian studio has the opportunity, and often the responsibility, to introduce the materials, techniques, and people through which its work should be understood.

There is no single Colombian aesthetic. Our country holds many landscapes, traditions, and ways of making. Its luxury can be quiet, sculptural, exuberant, or restrained. What interests us is the possibility of creating something with a clear sense of origin and the confidence to enter a wider conversation.

At VERDI, this begins in our Bogotá atelier, where artisans work with fibres and metal threads. Colombian fique, Peruvian alpaca, and Chilean copper belong to our material vocabulary. Their meeting gives us a way to explore a Colombian point of view through a broader Latin American dialogue.

A woven surface makes that dialogue tangible. Light catches a metallic thread. A natural fibre gives the piece texture and structure. The finished object carries decisions about tension, proportion, colour, and the way it will be lived with. Its beauty rewards attention.

This also asks something of the person who chooses it: curiosity. Where was it made? What knowledge shaped it? Why this material? What gives it the capacity to remain meaningful over time? These questions deepen the pleasure of ownership, wherever a piece comes from.

Choosing Colombian luxury can bring another kind of intimacy. It offers a relationship with a place we may know, expressed through an object that helps us see it differently. Something familiar acquires a new presence in our homes, in our wardrobes, and in the way we understand our own culture.

International and Colombian luxury can inhabit the same object. A piece can travel, be collected, and belong in many cities while carrying the specificity of where it began.

That is the possibility we want to keep exploring at VERDI: making work whose origin remains present as its world grows larger. Work that invites us to look closely, and to recognise the richness within reach.
