Our Heritage

Weaving with Fique: Colombian Craft and Durability

In the world of natural fibers, fique stands out as one of Colombia’s most remarkable contributions to sustainable design. For centuries, this fiber has been cultivated and woven by artisans in Curití, Santander, who have mastered the art of transforming raw leaves into timeless textiles. At VERDI, we honor this tradition by creating handwoven fique rugs that combine heritage, durability, and modern design.

What Is Fique Fiber?

Fique comes from the leaves of the Furcraea plant, native to the Andean region. Known for its strength and resilience, the fiber has long been used in Colombian homes and workshops. Unlike industrial fibers, fique is biodegradable, requires little water, and thrives without chemical fertilizers—making it a sustainable alternative for conscious interiors.

Sustainability Rooted in Nature

Choosing fique means choosing a material that is both eco-friendly and regenerative. The plant’s leaves can be harvested without harming its root system, ensuring continuous growth. Its cultivation supports small-scale farming communities, making fique a fiber that not only respects the environment but also strengthens local economies.

Craftsmanship from Curití, Santander

At VERDI, we work closely with the artisans of Curití, a town renowned for its fique weaving tradition. Each rug is the result of hours of skilled handwork, where ancestral knowledge meets contemporary design. By valuing artisan labor, we ensure that every VERDI piece carries with it a story of cultural preservation and human touch.

Why Fique Rugs?

Fique rugs are not only beautiful and textural, but also highly durable. Their natural resistance makes them ideal for high-traffic areas such as living rooms, dining spaces, and entryways. The fiber’s rustic yet refined texture adds warmth to interiors, blending seamlessly with modern, minimalist, or traditional design styles.

VERDI’s Commitment

Our mission is to intertwine heritage with innovation. By elevating fique from a traditional craft to a luxury textile, we bring Colombian artistry into the global design conversation. Each VERDI rug is more than a product—it is a piece of sustainable craft, cultural identity, and lasting beauty.
